India: in an important move towards revolutionising the Indian technology-distribution industry, the country's main technology distributors have come together to launch "The Technology Distribution Association of India" (TDAI). The Association's motto is, "we can only build when we know how to sustain". During the last two decades, India has taken tremendous strides in the use and adoption of IT products both in the consumer as well as the commercial space. While the technology vendors have played a pre-eminent role in introducing the Indian customer to the immense benefits of their products and solutions, the widespread use of IT products and processes can, in a large measure, be attributed to the contribution of a huge distribution channel, which has facilitated easy availability through their reach, presence and financial commitment. The success of the distribution channel is equally accredited to all the stake holders in the supply chain: Vendors, Distributors and Dealers of IT products, services and solutions. With an aim to drive the industry’s next level of evolution through constructive dialogues amongst all stake holders, the leading Indian technology distributors have founded TDAI. The current members of TDAI collectively contribute nearly €6,5b annually towards the total IT industry business in the country. A first of its kind non- profit organization in Asia Pacific and India, TDAI's objective is to build a transparent and organized distribution services sector in India through risk mitigated best practices. While maintaining a strategic and healthy channel through good governance and appropriate compliance standards, from the Manufacturer to the End User, TDAI will support the industry's development and expansion while ensuring business hygiene. TDAI will provide all industry stake holders a common ground for deliberating on regulatory issues that impact them, with a view to take those up with relevant authorities for resolution. It will act as a platform through which they could contribute inputs and information that would help shape the industry. TDAI will facilitate interaction with various Dealer Associations on common issues faced by the distribution eco-system as also a forum for discussion with Vendors on taking the channel business to its next stage of development. The initiatives of this Association will pave the way for fostering trust and goodwill amongst all stakeholders of the community. TDAI's current members are: multispecialist Avnet Technology Solutions, network and security VAD Inflow Technologies, broadliners Compuage Infocom, Ingram Micro, Iris Computers, Neoteric Infomatique, Redington, PC component specialist Rashi Peripherals, PC component and peripheral specialist Supertron Electronic and peripheral and PC specialist Savex Computers.

Toshiba strengthens distribution
India : Japanese vendor Toshiba has revamped its distribution model in the country as part of its strategy to grow 100 percent year-on-year in 2011. The vendor has opted for a hybrid model, continuing to operate through national distributors (NDs) for matured markets while appointing regional distributors (RDs) for several upcountry regions. In addition, Toshiba is putting in place a strong sub-distribution channel.
Toshiba has appointed RDs in emerging markets such as Goa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Orissa and the north-east. It will continue to address the rest of the market through NDs such as Ingram Micro, Redington and Compuage.Patna-based Caltron Info Trade will be in charge of Bihar and Jharkhand, while SA Infoways has been appointed for Orissa. Goa is handled by Jamson Computers, while Uttarakhand and J&K are handled by VSM Technologies and Digital Systems respectively. The entire north-east will be managed by Datamation Services, while the Chhattisgarh distributor will be Raipur-based Mahesh & Co.
Toshiba will bill RDs directly and will not allow NDs to operate in these territories. "Thus far our business was largely concentrated in the top 30 cities, while the states where we have appointed new RDs did not account for much. We feel that a dedicated RD can focus more on building a channel than an ND," explained Toshiba's local director Sivakumar (source : Computer Reseller News India).
