A new distributor for Check Point Software

Norway: Israeli security champion Check Point Software has appointed network and security VAD SEC Datacom as a new official distributor in the country (source: IT Bransjen Norge).

SEC DataCom gears up for Finnish expansion
2016-12-23

Scandinavia: network, security and storage VAD SEC DataCom has revealed plans to establish a physical presence in Finland next year in a bid to achieve its pan-Nordic ambitions. Headquartered in the Danish municipality of Allerød, SEC DataCom has been in the distribution business since 1992 but has opened two new offices – one in Norway and the other in Sweden – in the last two years. Now the firm has made known its plans to move into its fourth territory during the second half of FY17. Johan Nielsen, product manager at SEC DataCom, said Finland is on the whole an uncharted region for VAD, explaining that SEC DataCom currently has one employee from its Stockholm office responsible for "a couple of resellers". Nielsen said the move reflects the distributor's ambitions to become a true Scandinavia-wide value-added distributor. "Next year is the plan to expand to Finland which will mean we can say we cover the Scandinavian region. We are going to start an office, or team up with a partner, or make a buyout of another company with a similar portfolio. We have not decided how we will do it, but the plan is coverage", he said. "We are investigating different ways to do it. It may be that suddenly there will be an opportunity that we didn't see coming."

Although Finnish expansion is on the cards, Nielsen said boosting the headcount of its Drammen and Stockholm offices is "our main priority". With around 70 staff across all three offices, Nielsen said SEC will look to hire between 12 and 15 people across its offices in Drammen and Stockholm, comprising mainly sales and support positions. "Expansion of our offices in Norway and Sweden is definitely on the books. Today we have some traction in those countries but we are using some of the pre-sales and support here in Denmark to help the Norway and Sweden office, but we want to have them locally in Sweden and Norway as well", he said. "We want to expand our business to be more attractive and open more windows with who we can work with. It is an issue to be a distributor in a small country like Denmark because a vendor from the US [might] look at Denmark on the European map and say 'OK, is it actually a country or just a spot left over from coffee or something like that?' It is actually hard to find value-added distributors that cover all of the Nordics. There will be some smaller players in individual countries, but for vendors who want to find the same quality in each region, it is very hard to find a distributor that adds value. There are enough pan-European and Nordic broadline distributors but they do not add value, they just move boxes."

Mimosa recently signed SEC DataCom as its Nordic distributor. John Speakman, EMEA channel manager for the networking vendor, said Mimosa relies heavily on its distribution partners due to the small size of its current EMEA workforce. "In Mimosa there are currently only two of us that serve the EMEA region. We have support centres in Europe in Istanbul but we rely heavily on our distributors", he said. "Although some people say they have coverage across the Nordic region, more often than not they just have one guy in each country. We were looking for a true pan-Nordic distributor, one that actually added value. Value-added is a term that is thrown about too much, and a lot of distributors mistake adding value for adding cost, but our experience so far is that SEC really do add value in support services." Speakman said Mimosa's partners in the Nordics will mainly consist of service providers, and will look to leverage SEC DataCom's relationship with telecoms heavyweights such as TDC and Televerket. Nielsen said these large telecoms companies will find the most benefit in using Mimosa's product. "Not all of our partners will be interested in this technology. We have 600 to 800 active partners but not all of them are addressable with this solution, but we are going to address the high-scale ones that actually have projects for these kind of solutions. Right now on a Nordic level, Mimosa will be used for 15 to 20 active projects. These are not small projects; with each one there are normally around 5,000 households that need to be connected", said Nielsen (source: Channelnomic Europe).
