"It will enable our customers to simplify and accelerate their product development cycles and ease rapid prototyping." Digilent products are available through RS Components offices in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Three new brands for RS Components

Semiconductor distributor and etailer RS Components has signed an authorised distribution agreement with Adafruit Industries, a vendor of open-source hardware, tools, equipment and electronics for makers and hobbyists of all ages and skill levels, and anyone wanting to learn about electronics. Building on the existing relationship between RS and Adafruit, the agreement will enable customers anywhere in the world to purchase directly from the largest selection of Adafruit products available from any global distributor. While RS currently stocks a number of Adafruit products, the agreement enables a considerable expansion of the portfolio to include the entire line up of current products including Adafruit's top-selling boards and accessories for Raspberry Pi and Arduino. "Adafruit is a well-respected provider of maker and hobbyist products aimed at a highly diverse range of ages and skills. This is very important to our growing user base of students and innovators. Adafruit's high quality and carefully selected devices and tools will definitely enhance the selection of products RS is able to offer to the maker community", said Rob Maycroft, Global Product Manager at RS. "RS has a great reputation for high standards of service and world-class logistics. This global agreement with RS will help us extend our reach to ensure that engineers, developers and makers across the world have fast and easy access to our electronics and more", said Limor 'Ladyada' Fried, founder and engineer at Adafruit Industries.

The distributor has also introduced a new addition to its extensive portfolio of board-level solutions for developers and makers with the new LattePanda from DF Robot. The LattePanda is a low-cost Windows 10 single-board computer that is ideal for a diverse range of users including Windows and IoT developers, hardware enthusiasts and robotics designers, as well as makers and hobbyists. The introduction comes with the recent signing of a global distribution agreement between RS and DF Robot, enabling RS to distribute a number of the company's products. While the DF Robot products enable RS to better address the maker community, the high specification of products such as the LattePanda also allows RS to offer products that are ideal for the professional market. The LattePanda comes pre-installed with a full version of Windows 10 and includes powerful tools such as Visual Studio, NodeJS and Java. Using existing APIs, developers can easily use C#, Javascript, Ruby and others to produce their own software and hardware projects on the LattePanda, just as they would normally do on a PC or bulky laptop. The board is also compatible with any peripherals that work with a PC such as printers, joysticks and cameras. The speed and power of the LattePanda comes from its 1.8GHz Intel quad-core processor and extensive memory options, offering up to 4GB RAM and up to 64GB onboard Flash memory. The board has excellent connectivity with integrated WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 interfaces. The board also includes an integrated Arduino-compatible co-processor, which means it can easily be used to control and sense the physical world like an Arduino board. The package enables users to build a prototype in minutes, test ideas, optimise code and develop a product. In addition to the LattePanda, RS will shortly be launching a selection of accessory products for both the Arduino and the Raspberry Pi. "RS is looking to engage with more and more developers and makers, helping them to fully realise their talent and potential", said Jon Boxall, Head of Semiconductors at RS Components. "To help achieve this goal, RS is partnering with highly innovative companies such as DF Robot that provide a range of exciting products for professionals and makers – the powerful LattePanda Windows-based single-board computer is just one example of many."

Finally, the distributor has also added more than 600 Amphenol FCI connector and cable assembly product lines to its portfolio. The additions expand the RS AFCI offering to over 1700 lines, including backplane and mezzanine connectors, power connectors, power supply accessories, board-to-board and wire-to-board connectors, I/O connectors, optical interconnect, cable assemblies, terminal blocks and flexible printed circuit (FPC) connectors. The move follows the acquisition of leading connector and cable assembly manufacturer FCI by Amphenol in June 2016, with the merged operation subsequently rebranded as Amphenol FCI, or AFCI. The acquisition has served to strengthen AFCI's position as an international supplier to the telecommunications, data communications, data storage, server, consumer electronics, industrial, automotive and medical equipment, instrumentation and renewable energy markets. A notable AFCI product addition is the Rotaconnect range of rotatable board-to-board SMT connectors, including new-to-market pegged versions designed to simplify placement. AFCI Rotaconnect can be used to make perpendicular, coplanar and angled connections. A hermaphroditic "mates to itself" design allows mating and disengaging at any angle between +90° and –60°, so the connectors can be placed anywhere on a PCB. Typical Rotaconnect applications include control boards, sensors, actuators, rigid LED strips, automotive lighting, channel lettering and lighting luminaires. The newest Rotaconnect product lines add locating pegs to eliminate hold-down, simplifying placement and helping electronic design engineers save space between PCB connectors.

Adafruit Industries, Amphenol and DF Robot products are available through RS Components offices in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

RS Components extends 3D modelling portfolio with Fuel3D

Semiconductor etailer and distributor RS Components has added the CES award-winning Scanify handheld scanner from Fuel3D to its range of affordable desktop systems for 3D digitisation and printing. Scanify uses a combination of stereoscopy and photometry to create an accurate, high-resolution digital model including 8-bit RGB colour data. Setting a new benchmark for affordability among high-performing handheld 3D scanners, Scanify is fast, versatile and easy to use. The user places an optical tracking target on the object, as a reference for movement correction, and a one-click shot (0.1 seconds) then captures all the images needed to create the model. The scanner exports various file formats including STL, as used by many 3D printers, thereby allowing scanned objects to be replicated quickly and easily. In addition, support for OBJ and PLY formats allows direct export to popular design or animation software environments, hence making numerous creative avenues accessible for users such as designers, artists, educators, makers and hobbyists. RS is among the first distributors to offer Scanify to the market through its offices in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, following its launch at CES 2015 in January. Scanify joins the rapidly growing portfolio of 3D scanners, printers and printing materials from various manufacturers such as 3D Systems, BeeVeryCreative, MakerBot, RepRapPro, Ultimaker, and the own-brand IdeaWerk FDM printer, now available from RS.
